With winter break coming to a close, I decided it would be a good time to reflect on the past month. After playing back the past month in my head, I realized most nights ended with me not being able to fall asleep and instead watching How I Met Your Mother. Not only is the show hilarious but I realized that offered me plenty of life lessons, as well. With the show coming to a close later this year, I thought it was only right to pay tribute to a show that has been making me laugh for the past eight or nine years.
1. Look Your Best, ALWAYS
“Suit up!” might be one of Barney Stinson’s most famous lines—after legen-WAIT FOR IT-dary, of course. Barney’s constant need to always wear a suit made me realize how important it is to always look your best. Although Barney makes up some ridiculous scenarios. he realizes that anything can happen at any time—so be prepared!
2. Anytime is a good time to catch up with friends
Season 8 brought a bundle of joy into Lily and Marshall’s lives and less time for the pair to spend with the gang. After realizing how hard managing friends and a baby can be the hard way, Lily and Marshall came to realization that no matter what was going on in their lives they had to make sure they made some time to catch up with their friends.
3. Sometimes you have to date all the wrong people before you meet “the one.”
Ted Mosby became the poster boy for dating all the wrong girls. The poor guy has been dumped and rejected by his best friend, left at the altar, and has been searching for his yellow umbrella for years. After eight long seasons, viewers have finally found out who “the mother” is. Ted showed all of us that you might have to get your heartbroken to find the one you’re meant to be with.
4. Nothing good happens after 2 A.M.
“Nothing good happens after 2 A.M.,” was a motto that Ted’s mother used to tell him. Unfortunately for Ted, he learned the hard way—and by the hard way I mean almost sleeping with Robin while he was still dating Victoria. Ted realized it and all of us should—if it’s after 2 A.M. and someone is trying to see you—go to sleep. If it’s urgent and important then go right ahead, but most of the time whatever is about to be discussed at 2 A.M. can wait until the morning.
5. Your past doesn’t define your future
Every character on HIMYM has at least one embarrassing moment/time from their past. Robin was once a Canadian pop singer named Robin Sparkles and Ted was a pretentious college kid whose “parents lived in Ohio but he lived in the moment.” Needless to say that all of the gang had some questionable decisions in their pasts, but that didn’t change who they truly were. The past is not something you should forget, but the past doesn’t rule your future.
Sadly, at the end of the season, fellow HIMYM fans and I will have to say goodbye to NYC’s favorite five-some. As cheesy as it sounds—the show might be over but what I’ve learned from it will stick around. Plus, there’s always reruns.
